Excellent!
"Lee's excellent monograph is a beautifully told tale of the lengthy and difficult history leading up to the creation of [the office of the Chancellor]."

Illuminating!
"[A]n illuminating, authoritative, and balanced account.... Lee is the one person in the best position to review this important aspect of the history of the University California.... Few people have both written so well about the history of the University of California and served that history so well."

Oswald and the CIA
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (May, 1995)
Author: John M. Newman
Average review score:

The documents speak for themselves
As a intern for Dr. Newman on this particular book, I spent countless hours searching for documents in the National Archives - I know first hand the length he went to provide accurate details. Dr. Newman recounts the interesting story of a dark point in our nation's history. He is very careful not to speculate on the assassination of Kennedy - he deals only with the facts before him - CIA and FBI documents that display what they knew about Oswald. He leaves the rest to the 'assassination buffs'

Oswald and CIA: was there a connection? Author thinks so.
This is an important book in the Kennedy assassination genre. It contains the text of CIA documents not previouslypublished, attempting to establish a CIA connection withLee Harvey Oswald and subsequent efforts on the part of the CIA to conceal this connection through tampering with itsOswald files. The book is flawed by poor editing, andfrom time to time the author makes great leaps in his logic, but for all that, it is well worth the time spent reading. The book breaks off after Oswald's death. One can onlyhope that Mr. Newman writes another volume addressing post-assassination events, including the controversy surroundingthe bona fides of KGB defector Yuriy Nosenko and his claimto have been the KGB officer supervising the Oswald file inRussia

P.B. Bear's Birthday Party
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (01 June, 2001)
Author: Lee Davis
Average review score:

Birthday Fun!
This is my absolute favorite P.B. Bear book. The inside covers have beautiful color pictures of all things party. This is a great learning tool for kids. You can teach them the names of all sorts of fun items.

The story starts in the morning with P.B. Bear in his cute pajamas. He doesn't want to stay in bed because today is his birthday. With a "Happy Birthday to Me" he heads for breakfast. Friends start arriving at his home and soon they all decide to go for a picnic. When you turn the page...you have to keep turning the page because the words go in a circle around some railroad tracks.

The picnic looks just fantastic, with cake and gummy bears and all sorts of yummy cucumber sandwiches. Then, he opens all his presents. They ride home in a train and the tired little bear goes right to sleep...but not before he brushes his teeth!

This book is just filled with pictures. Some of the words are missing in the sentences and the picture of the word appears. So, you can have lots of fun teaching words.

Totally Cute!

This book is wonderful.
I bought this book long before I had children. I loved the way the author uses pictures in his books instead of all words. The characters are so lovable. I have this book plus PB Bear Treasure hunt. If they ever become available again I definately recommend them.

Particle Physics and Introduction to Field Theory
Published in Paperback by Harwood Academic Pub (June, 1981)
Author: Lee
Average review score:

The best.
This is the best by all means, matched by Weinberg's "Gravitation and Cosmology" and a few others.

Learn particle physics from a great master!
This is one of the best books I ever read. T.D. Lee, a distinguished Nobel prize winner, wrote this book so that bright chinese students could learn both quantum field theory and particle physics with little more than the book itself. It was a great success. The book is practically self contained, starting from classical point dynamics and going up to quantum chromodynamics, Weinberg-Salam, etc., in a very organized and pedagogical way, which doesn't exclude depth and great originality, even in much treaded soil. Don't think it has been superseded. You won't find such a delightful treatment of field theory and its applications anywhere else. This is my absolute favorite.

Patient A and Other Plays
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (April, 1995)
Author: Lee Blessing
Average review score:

What else can you say
Blessing, always witty, realistic, humanist, comedic. He has to be one of the most under-rated playwrights out there. Me and my wife enjoy every single one of his plays. His story-telling through characters is superb, and every little detail in his plays are there with a purpose. Further, every play he has written is with a purpose! His anthropological knowledge of our culture is stunning. I cannot emphasize this enough: all of his plays have a deeper purpose!
Blessing!

A Blessing!
Lee Blessing remains one of the worlds most underrated playwrights. Each play of his contains stands alone as a work of passionate fiction, but together, they represent a man who's mind can encompass thoughts and ideas heretofore undisturbed by others.

GO LEE BLESSING!!!

People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee "Scratch" Perry
Published in Paperback by Canongate Books (10 May, 2001)
Authors: David Katz and Rainford Hugh Lee Perry
Average review score:

People Funny Boy:
A must read for anyone who thought that they know about Reggea, Rock Steady, Ska - Jamaican music in general. This book must be the ultimate documentary of music as well as the music scene in Jamaica during the 60's,70's, and 80's. It's not just a book about Scratch; it is a book about all Jamaican musicians, singers and procuders of the period. It's the best documented piece of Jamaican history. Someday it will become the most sought after Jamaican history book!

David Kratz ensures that the reader lives moment by moment with almost every musician, producers, and Jamaican artist of the period - some of whom have long been forgotten. He takes you into the studios, delves into the background of each and every artist mentioned in the book, takes to the UK and US with Scratch and Bob Marley, then brings you back to the Black Art Studio where Scratch produced some of the most revolutionary and influential Jamaican music.

Any Jamaican who reads this book will certainly say: "Me know da music deh, but me didn't know sey a Scratch do it." The reader will soon learn that Scratch is the greatest Jamaican music producer. No other producer will ever come close to matching his skill and artistry of Scratch in the studio. Nuff respect to Scratch. He is a true genious! And hat's off to David Katz. He certainly knows how to "ride de rythm". The book is a master piece!

Very, very Upsetting!
Scratch your Lee Perry itch. I am awed to have in my hands 536 pages of all things Upsetting. Buy this book, if a so a so.

People in Crisis : Clinical and Public Health Perspectives
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (April, 2001)
Author: Lee Ann Hoff
Average review score:

This book is concise, excellent
As a college professor teaching courses in the school of social work, I found Dr. Hoff's book an excellent text. The book covers all aspect of crisis intervention and illustrates the concepts with case examples. It was rated very highly by all the students in the class, as well as professional colleagues in the field. As a clinician providing crisis intervention to dirverse populations on a daily basis, I found the book to be a great help, and a wonderful teaching tool for staff and interns in the field as well. I hightly recommend it to anyone. I especially appreciated Dr. Hoff's philosphy on life and strenth of the individuals

Excellent practical approaches to common human crisies
I used this book to supplement material in a graduate level Crisis Intervention class, and found it to be invaluable. There is a smattering of theory, but the bulk of the material focuses on understanding the human situation behind common crises such as suicide, loss, HIV, homelessness, victims of violence, health care crises, voiolent people, and life-change crises. Very practical and readily applicable, the text lends a firm backbone to anyone working in the crisis management field for the first time, and even for old timers who have never felt quite comfortable with suicide, etc. Takes the guesswork out of understanding the issues behind the problem, and empowers the worker. I highly recommend this book.

Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy: A Bridge from Body to Soul
Published in Paperback by Health Communications (November, 1997)
Author: Michael Lee
Average review score:

Reviewed for Yoga Journal by Richard Miller, Ph.D
The best course I attended while earning my Ph.D. in psychology was "Theories of Personality." The professor brought the theories to life by describing the lives of each theorist - including people like Freud, Jung, and Maslow. She underscored how all theories grow out of an individual's life experience.

Michael Lee wrote his book on Phoenix Rising yoga Therapy (PRYT) from this perspective. We get to know Michael and his life first. As he describes his own psycho-spiritual journey, we tangibly feel how his approach to training teachers grew organically out of her personal life experiences. And as Michael tell his story, I see that he is also telling my story. It is not just about his journey in life and Yoga, it is also about my journey. This is also the story of how the PRYT training came to be, and thus if you are thinking of taking this training or are interest in following the story of a well-known Western yogi, I can recommend this unpretentious book.

I like that Michael acknowledges early on that each one of us is unique. We each follow a singular path to freedom, and we hold within ourselves the answers that guide us on our path. In turn, true teachers don't tell us what to do. They support us as we discover our own understanding. They help us accept ourselves as we are, so that we may listen deeply and uncover our own voice and song. Phoenix Rising, as envisioned by Michael, supports these views. It supports the therapist as guide, not as "one-who-knows-all."

Michael constantly reminds us that we need to keep out of our own way and the way of the student. Our mind is quick to give advice, but this instills an attitude that the therapist knows what is best for the client. Michael advises us to keep quiet and allow the client to come to his or her own knowing. While simple, this is perhaps the single most powerful message in the book - the attitude of listening, staying out of the way, witnessing, and being inwardly still, while at the same time being an actively engaged loving presence.

In Michael's words, "The more invisible and unobtrusive I am, the more clients feel they have permission to surrender to their body's innate wisdom. The process [of PRYT] unfolds naturally, guided by their inner being as I simply provide a space of acceptance and love, affirming all aspects of each person as the work of the Divine within."

At its core, PRYT is a practice that promotes transformation by drawing on the unique wisdom of the body. And as Michael affirms, "For empowerment and transformation to occur, the process must honor the spirit and stay out of its way. When this happens, Yoga is therapy."

Michael once told me that he was not trying to create a be-all-end-all training for Yoga teachers and therapists. He was interested in concentrating on a particular psycho-spiritual approach utilizing body and breath to enable students to get in touch with their core beliefs and emotions. Through PRYT he wanted to dig one well deeply, in one place. I'd say; he's struck a clear spring for refreshing water.

This is an excellent book for those of us who would like toread what yoga can do in one's personal life. The author explainssituations in his life and how his studies of yoga effected them. Porcine Canticles
Published in Paperback by Copper Canyon Press (December, 1984)
Author: David Lee
Average review score:

Pig Prose and Poetry
Don't let the title fool you, these are outstanding pieces of humor and drama written on a unique subject matter.

This book will revolutionize your thinking about poetry.
This book could single-handedly create a popular audience for poetry. Poets and non-poets alike will enjoy these poems. In these inter-connected poems, John, Dave, Jan, and Blackula toil into our hearts. You'll never forget the heartbreaking "For Jan, With Love," where Jan's "little hands" labor all night to save John's red sow. Meanwhile, poems like "The Chain Letter (An American Tragedy)" will have you and your friends in stitches (these poems are splendid read aloud).

I've often asked my college-level students to read this book, and it's never failed to please every student. Some students come to it reluctant to read about pigs in the dialect of a rural farmer, but Lee's humor and humanity wins everyone over.

David Clewell has said of David Lee, "He doesn't have time for small talk, he's too busy with real and vital things to say: he entertains us, enlightens us, makes us laugh and feel good laughing, makes us taste the sadness of our world."

If you buy one book of poetry in your life, buy this one.
